Writing Module... Writing Module... Writing Module

Be a Painter!

Writing is one of 4 modules in IELTS exam. Some IELTS candidates claim it is difficult, but I say it is not difficult at all, if you  believe that writing is similar to painting. A painter chooses his brushes, colors, and a canvass then he knows what he is going to do. Actually, the same story happens while writing, that is to say, you, as a writer, choose your topic, select the best words and structure, and then commence writing. I frequently hear these 2 sentences below:

1. "I don't know what to write!",

2. "I know the answer, but don't know how to write",

Ok, the answer is easy:

You should read about the topic, first. I mean, if you are going to write an essay (Task 2, for example), You need to read, at least, 2500 words or maybe more about it . It is not logical to expect yourself too much, that is, you have to read before you start writing. Let me put it this way, imagine you are thirsty, first you have to fill the glass with water. Ok, there you go. Drink!

How to start writing an essay

Write about the following topic (task 2):

People today move to new cities or new countries more than ever before. What challenges do they experience? What strategies are there to meet these challenges?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant ideas from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

(Soource: IELTS ON TRACK, Stephen Slater)

Step 1: Find the key words or phrases such as 'move to new cities or countries', 'challenges of immigration', and 'strategies to overcome problems related to immigration'

Step 2: Read about them (key words and phrases) as many articles as you can. The more the better.

Step 3: Now, you have a clear picture of what you are going to do.

Step 4: Ok, there is no step 5. Come on! Start writing. 250-worded essay is a piece of pie. Normally, you can write a 250-worded essay within 20 to 25 minutes.

My students always take these 4 steps successfully. It really works.

Ok, dear readers, I have to leave now. I will be back soon... Don't forget to leave a comment!
